Environmental Awareness as a Priority: Earth Week at the Odesa Branch of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority”
Earth Week was held at the Odesa Branch of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority” (SE “USPA”), bringing together a series of educational and hands-on activities aimed at raising employees’ environmental awareness and encouraging their active participation in environmental initiatives.
Environmental safety remains one of the port’s key priorities. Among the main areas of focus are compliance with environmental legislation within both the port territory and its water area, as well as the prevention of environmental pollution in line with the responsibilities assigned to the SE “USPA”.
Throughout the week, Environmental Safety specialists at the Odesa Branch of SE “USPA” delivered lectures and practical training sessions for employees. These activities have been conducted for several consecutive years in cooperation with the port’s environmental experts and the stevedoring company “Ukrelevatorprom.”
The port’s environmental team prepared a presentation covering general information about the port, its technical capabilities, and the environmental safety functions and responsibilities defined by the Law of Ukraine “On Seaports of Ukraine” and assigned to SE “USPA,” in particular its Odesa Branch.
Special attention during the events was given to one of the key international conventions on marine environmental protection – the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). Environmental specialists from the Odesa Branch of SE “USPA” informed participants about potential sources of pollution, response mechanisms, and the resources and equipment used to contain and eliminate the consequences of such incidents.
In addition to the educational component, port workers traditionally joined the nationwide initiative “Plastic Saves Lives,” implemented within the framework of the “City of the Future” project. As part of the campaign, plastic waste was collected for further recycling.
The organization of such events once again highlights that environmental responsibility is not only a requirement of the time, but also an integral part of the port’s daily operations.
